Myanmar refuses to take back nabbed illegals
PUTRAJAYA: Efforts to deport illegal immigrants from Myanmar, who were arrested in the ongoing Ops 6P Bersepadu has hit a bump after their government refused to recognise them.
Immigration director-general Datuk Alias Ahmad said their embassy in Kuala Lumpur also refused to issue travel documents to the illegals.
“How are we to deport them when they do not have travel documents because their own country has refused to recognise them as their citizens.
“These illegals speak the Myanmar language but their government refused to issue them the travel documents and without any travel documents, we cannot just push them out (of the country),” he told reporters after handing over his duty to the department’s deputy director-general Aloyah Mamat yesterday.
Alias has been appointed Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism Ministry secretary-general with Aloyah now heading the Immigration Department.
Both start their duties today.
Alias added that there were about 500 illegal immigrants from Myan-mar in the detention centres caught in the situation and the department was working with Wisma Putra to resolve the problem.
