Female students in Indonesia may be forced to undergo 'virginity tests'

Indonesia's education chief Muhammad Rasyid has drafted plans to 'protect children from prostitution and free sex'

A plan to make female high school students undergo mandatory virginity tests has been met with outrage from activists, who argue that it discriminates against women and violates their human rights.
Education chief Muhammad Rasyid, of Prabumulih district in south Sumatra put forward the idea, describing it as "an accurate way to protect children from prostitution and free sex". He said he would use the city budget to begin tests early next year if MPs approved the proposal.
"This is for their own good," Rasyid said. "Every woman has the right to virginity … we expect students not to commit negative acts."
The test would require female senior school students aged 16 to 19 to have their hymen examined every year until graduation. Boys, however, would undergo no investigation into whether they had had sex.
The plan has met with some support from local politicians, who said the test would help cut down on "rampant" promiscuity in the district.

Education agency never
planned virginity test:
Chief

The chief educator in Prabumulih city, South Sumatra, said he never planned a mass virginity test for female students at a senior high school in the city and claimed that the media had misunderstood his statement.

“We never planned a virginity test for female students,” Prabumulih Education Agency chief HM Rasyid said in a written statement sent to The Jakarta Post on Wednesday.

“We were only approving the request made by the parents of a student after she was accused of no longer being a virgin by a suspect in a human trafficking case.”

Rasyid said he agreed with the demand because he did not want to see any false accusations against three females who were arrested in the case and claimed to be students.

“We have also never planned to use the 2014 city budget,” he added.

He said virginity tests should not be carried out considering religious, human rights and justice aspects.

“Besides, it is also not educative for the female students or their psychological and mental development,” he added.

Rasyid said the fiasco started when news emerged on the arrest of six women in a human-trafficking network of which three claimed to be students.
